How does your neckline meet your necklace?

The same necklace can draw a different line on three tops. Treat the space around a neckline as room to explore.

Bring out three familiar tops

When choosing a necklace, it is easy to focus only on the jewellery. The fabric colour, neckline opening and seam also contribute to what you see. Take out three familiar tops: perhaps a round-neck T-shirt, a buttoned shirt and higher-neck knitwear. Try the same necklace with each. Watch where its pendant lands. Does it meet the fabric edge, sit in the opening or rest over the fabric? This observation gives you a personal starting point without needing to memorise a rule for every neckline.

Follow the line or contrast it

You may enjoy the repetition of a rounded necklace against a round neckline. A pendant dropping into a V-shaped shirt opening can follow its line. These are ideas to try; a contrasting shape can also appeal. If the necklace repeatedly meets the fabric edge and you keep adjusting it, try another length or another top. With a shirt, changing one button can alter the available space. Stay within the opening you feel comfortable wearing. The clothes and jewellery should work with the way you enjoy dressing.

Space belongs in the outfit too

A top with a tie, pronounced buttons or a pattern may already provide the detail you enjoy. You can leave the necklace aside and choose earrings or a ring instead. When wearing a necklace over higher-neck fabric, look at how its motif reads against the colour. A detail that blends into a pale top may become clearer on a dark one, though you may prefer either effect. Choose your favourite of the three pairings and name what you like: space, repetition or contrast.
