A small colour accent in a simple outfit

A colourful detail need not spread through the whole outfit. You can begin with one small point.

Choose one colour

Imagine a small colourful detail with a simple outfit, such as a cream top and dark trousers. If you own colourful earrings or a pendant, begin with that piece. Before adding other accessories, notice where the colour appears. A small detail can still be the first place your eye reaches. Rather than looking for a rule about which colour to wear, choose a tone you enjoy seeing today. If you have no colourful jewellery, save the idea without buying anything for the exercise.

One point or a small repetition?

First, let the jewellery be the only coloured detail. Then, if you like, echo it with a nearby tone in a bag, scarf or another accessory you already own. An exact match is unnecessary. Does the single point feel more independent, while repetition feels more connected? Neither version needs to be more complete. Give the colour as much room as you want rather than spreading it everywhere. Keep the jewellery unchanged so you are comparing its surroundings.

Decide within the whole outfit

A colour you enjoy close up in your hand can feel different when worn. Step back from the mirror and look at the whole outfit. Is the detail you wanted to emphasise still the one you notice? Remove a nearby accessory if you want another comparison. Use the same light for photographs and avoid changing colours with filters. Your note can be simple: I like this colour in one place. Another day, you may enjoy a repetition instead.
