Making room for jewellery alongside prints

Stripes, florals or small geometric shapes: find one detail in the print and explore its connection with your jewellery.

Choose one clue within the print

Wearing a printed shirt doesn’t mean you have to put all your jewellery away. First, notice what you enjoy about the print: the order of fine stripes, the curves of flowers or the meeting of colours. That detail can offer a starting point. Rounded leaves might suggest earrings with similarly soft lines, without needing to repeat the flower itself. Put the shirt on and look from a few steps back. Small motifs that appear individually close up may read as a single texture from further away. Consider that overall impression too.

Try repetition and contrast separately

For the first version, choose jewellery that follows a line in the print: straight earrings with stripes, for example, or hoops with rounded motifs. For the second, explore a contrast by placing one distinct shape alongside a small, dense pattern. Neither approach needs to be the correct choice every time. Repetition can connect elements, while contrast creates a separate point of interest. Keep your other accessories the same in both versions so the difference is easier to see. You can also explore just one colour connection instead of trying to reproduce every colour.

Consider where the jewellery sits

If the print feels especially dense near the collar, explore a different position for your jewellery. Leaving the necklace aside and choosing a ring gives you another detail without changing the shirt. When the print is on your trousers or skirt, earrings can create a separate line further away. Notice how your eye moves around the outfit, without turning the exercise into a count of too many or too few pieces. Finally, stand back as if talking to a friend. What do you notice first, and is that what you want to emphasise?
