Your bag clasp is part of the look too

Your jewellery and the metal-looking detail on your bag need not match. Begin with the lines between them.

Bring the bag into the frame

When choosing jewellery, you often look at your face or neckline. Once you pick up your bag, another detail appears lower down: a round clasp, a slim chain or a rectangular fastening. Bring a familiar bag into the mirror with a jewellery pairing you already enjoy. Picture a cream top, deep olive trousers, little hoop earrings and a bag with a rectangular clasp. Hold it at the height where you normally carry it rather than leaving it on a chair. You can then consider the view that accompanies you during the day.

Look for a relationship between lines

The clasp and your earrings need not appear in the same tone. Similar curves can echo each other; you might also enjoy a round earring beside an angular fastening. Describe what you see first: a repetition or a distinct contrast? Keep a favourite bag in the experiment even if its tone differs. You do not need to find new jewellery to bring every detail into one colour. Discuss visible colour and shape rather than guessing materials from appearance. Enjoying the pairing does not require a material label.

Look once with the bag and once without

Keep the clothes and jewellery unchanged and put the bag aside for a moment, then pick it up again. Does the clasp draw your eye downward, or does the jewellery near your face remain the first detail you notice? The two versions need not share one focus. You carry a bag for part of the day and set it down later; your jewellery can accompany both moments. A simple note might be: “I enjoy the contrast between this clasp and the little hoop.” Keep one connection you noticed rather than a rule that every accessory must match.
